Abstract

Background. During the revival of Orthodox life the historical issues of the Samara diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church as well as the increasing number of Orthodox parishes, clergy and believers have acquired special relevance at the present stage. On the basis of studying the situation and the activities of the Samara diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1851–1917 it is very important to make valid conclusions, learn lessons, formulate scientific and practical recommendations which can be used for further development of the domestic historical science and to improve the state-church relations. The purpose of the study is based on a comprehensive analysis of the situation and activities of the Samara diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1851–1917 to investigate the role of the ruling bishops in the formation and development of the Samara diocese in 1851–1917, to identify the nature of changes in the structure of the diocesan and parish administration, to study the educational activities of the Samara diocese, the processes of church construction, to investigate the nature and evaluate the results of the activities of the ruling bishops, clergy and believers of the Samara diocese during periods of difficult trials.
Materials and methods. The implementation of research tasks was achieved using the documents extracted from the funds of the Central State Archive of the Samara Region. A special place is occupied with the reports of the ruling archbishops, the memoirs of contemporaries. The methodological potential includes: a comparative historical method, the use of which allows to compare the appearance of the ruling archbishops; a statistical method, the significance of which is obvious for the data analysis related to the construction of new monasteries and temples and changes in the cadre’s staff potential.
Results. The role of the ruling archbishops in the formation and development of the Samara diocese in 1851–1917 is investigated. It was the ruling archbishops who initiated the construction of large churches, the opening of religious educational institutions and monasteries, guardianships and brotherhoods, and the publication of diocesan sheets. All diocesan projects depended on the personality of the ruling archbishop, his active position, initiative, since no undertaking in church matters is possible without a bishop’s blessing. According to church tradition, the ruling archbishop was the sovereign head of the diocese entrusted to him. The spiritual consistory acted under his guidance. The ruling archbishop could lead the structures which had a priority for diocesan activities, for example, the diocesan mission. Among the Samara archbishops there were spiritual writers, philanthropists, devotees of piety. Two archbishops: Bishop Gerasim (Dobroserdov) and Vladimir (Epiphany) were later glorified in the people of saints. The spiritual and personal authority of the Samara archbishops helped solve organizational issues which inevitably arise in the newly opened diocese, attracted the same enthusiasts and ascetics of their work.
Conclusions. A study of the ruling archbishops of the Samara diocese’ appearance makes possible to clarify the content of positive trends in the church diocesan sphere in late Imperial Russia, to take into account the problems related to the ruling archbishops’ activities, to abandon the stereotypes in assessing their role and place in public and church life and to identify new directions in the further study of scientific issues. In the diocese, under the leadership of the ruling archbishops, traditions of church mercy were developed, the fraternities, almshouses, parish trusteeships and councils, charitable organizations and societies were active. The ruling archbishops regularly visited the parishes of the diocese, were aware of the aspirations and needs of both priests and clergy, and parishioners.
